Portishead marathon man Ben Smith is heading to America for a mighty new challenge – and you can take up your own endeavour to help support him.

Ben ran 401 marathons in 401 days between 2015 and 2016 and raised more than £330,000 for two anti-bullying charities. In recognition of this amazing achievement, he was named Fundraiser of the Year at the 2016 ITV Pride of Britain awards and won the Helen Rollason Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year show.

Now he has launched his new challenge – USA 2020 – and is pushing the boundaries even further.

Ben will travel to the USA in March 2020 for a 104-day adventure where he will run a marathon in each of the 50 US state capitals, then get on a bike and cycle between each location.

He will cover 18,500 miles, average about 177 miles a day, burn 15,000 calories each day, climb the equivalent of up and down Mount Everest 9.2 times, and complete between 14 to 15 hours of activity each day.

Ben hopes to raise £1m, for both the 401 Foundation and Youth Sport Trust.

The 401 Challenge is looking to fund the cost of the USA trip by giving people the chance to purchase tickets for one of two virtual challenges.

Choose from:

  • virtual challenge 1 – run up to 1,310 miles in 365 days
  • virtual Challenge 2 – cycle up to 17,000 miles in 365 days.

Ticket sales are now open and will close on Tuesday 12 March.

The virtual challenges will then start on Wednesday 13 March and last 365 days up to Friday 13 March 2020 – the official start date of the USA 2020 challenge.
